ITALY

Rome | Florence | Cinque Terre

ABOUT

Language(s): The official language of Italy is Italian. In the larger cities most people have at least a basic understanding of English. French is also a common 2nd language which Italians learn to speak.

Currency: EUR - Italy is part of the Eurozone, which consists of 19 countries who use the euro as their main currency.

Transportation: There is a large developed public transport system in Italy. You can take trains between cities and use trams, buses and metros within the major cities. Uber is available in most cities.

Safety: Italy is (similarly to Western Europe) safe to visit. You do need to watch out for pickpockets and petty crimes especially in Rome & other big cities. Limit the amount of cash you carry and make sure to watch your bags on public transport / busy streets.

Climate: The climate in Italy is a warm Mediterranean climate.

When to visit

Italy generally has a nice and warm Mediterranean climate. However some regions in the north do have a colder climate especially in the fall and winter times. Italy is best explored during spring time. A moderately warm climate is present all over Italy at this time. Lesser crowds make the spring time a better time to visit than summer, when temperatures are higher, but so are the crowds. If you want to go skiing or enjoy a winter adventure the Italian Alps are the perfect place to visit. In the southern regions & islands in Italy, temperatures are still nice during the fall and can be a great time to visit and avoid crowds.

Where to go

Italy has a lot to offer depending on your interests. Some highlights I suggest you visit are:

  • Cities: Rome, Florence, Venice, Cinque Terre, Bologna

  • Outdoors: Italian Alps, Lake Como, Tuscany

  • Unique experiences: Wine Tours, Pompeii
